Milford Public Schools ‘Great Boat Race’ to ‘Launch’ on Sunday, 6/2/2024

Sunday, 6/2
Time: 12:30 p.m.
Location: Milford Harbor: Trailer Boat Launch Side

Now in its 2nd year, the Milford Public Schools will ‘launch’ its 2nd Annual Great Boat Race, in conjunction with Milford’s hugely popular Pirate Day, as organized by the Downtown Milford Business Association.

The Great Boat Race is a culminating educational event where students across the district are able to showcase their engineering and problem-solving skills by creating a boat made entirely out of recyclable materials.  Last year, students were required to make their boats using plastic water bottles.  This year, the designated materials are cardboard and duct tape.

The project was initiated by MPS enrichment teacher Tom Stack last year in conjunction with his students and lessons on solving environmental problems around the world.  Last year, Stack asked students to figure out ways to give discarded items a new use rather than ending up in a landfill.  Students had to consider the types of materials to use and create a plan on how to reuse them.  The Great Boat Race was thus born – and on Sunday (6/2) the race will take place again in Milford Harbor at approximately 12:30 p.m.!

One boat per school is allowed and students have been instructed to make sure it can accommodate 2 adults - with teachers, principals, and other staff members volunteering to navigate the race course. Twelve individual vessels are expected to participate.

Boats will enter Milford Harbor via the Trailer Boat Ramp area and move to the starting line.  The winning team will earn bragging rights for the year, along with a trophy to display in their school.

We are proud of our students across the district and look forward to the approach each team has taken to create a viable watercraft.

All are welcome to come down to Milford Harbor and enjoy this fun FREE event! Suggestion: get there early – last year this event drew thousands of onlookers!
