Law and Foran Esports Clubs to Compete on Tuesday, 5/21
Did you know that Milford Public Schools has esports clubs at Jonathan Law and Joseph A. Foran High Schools?
So wait… what exactly is esports? Esports, which is short for electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games. Esports are organized, multiplayer video game competitions between players individually or as teams. There are professional teams and players with fans and spectators like traditional sports.
The popularity of esports continues to grow rapidly:
Over 13,000 schools in the US have esports teams
Last year, more than 18,000 students from over 800 unique institutions competed in NACE Starleague (Collegiate Esports League)
Why esports in schools?
270+ colleges offer scholarship opportunities for esports
Universities such as the University of New Haven offer degrees such as a Bachelor of Science in Esports and Gaming
Esports are co-ed, inclusive to anyone who can use a computer
Engage students who might not otherwise participate in extracurricular activities
Requires problem solving, strategic planning and group preparation
Develops sportsmanship and cultivates friendships
Jonathan Law and Foran High Schools have been running esports clubs to prepare students for esports competition. Ms. Furst (Law) and Mr. Dubuque (Foran) have been advising student club members as they engage in Foran vs. Law scrimmages in games such as Splatoon 3, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros.Ultimate and Mario Kart 8DX. These matches have been streamed live on YouTube complete with player cameras and commentary.
Foran and Law will be engaging in a competition of several games in a challenging back-to-back-to-back event. The “Switch Gauntlet” live stream will start at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, May 21st and will include the Nintendo Switch games Splatoon 3, Mario Kart 8DX and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
