April 5, 2024
Dear Members of the Milford Public Schools community,
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will make its way across North America. While this monumental and historical event will create much excitement and enthusiasm in our area, I am writing to you today to provide some cautionary advice in order to keep everyone aware and safe. Here in Milford, the visible effects of the eclipse will span from 2:15 - 4:37 p.m., with the darkest point taking place at 3:27 p.m. As a result, during the afternoon on April 8th, outdoor recess for elementary students will be suspended beginning at 2:00 pm. Additionally, given that the height of the eclipse will occur during our normal dismissal time frame, we urge you to have a discussion with your children before Monday so they understand what will happen and how to react when the eclipse begins.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon aligns perfectly between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow upon our planet. The shadow will cause temporary darkness, particularly in the areas indicated in the direct path of the eclipse.
Precautions
During the eclipse, it is important not to look directly at the sun since the concentrated solar rays can cause serious eye damage, including retinal burns or permanent blindness. There are no pain receptors in the retina, so it is possible to cause damage before you realize it or have any pain. Watching the eclipse is possible, however, as long as you use special protective eyewear, specifically designed for this purpose (must meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard). Regular sunglasses do not provide the protection you need. For additional information on the eclipse and its impact, please visit the NASA website or the American Astronomical Society’s Solar Eclipse Task Force website. You may also like to review our FAQ document and share it with your children.
In closing, please know that student and staff safety continues to be our top priority in the Milford Public Schools. We are counting on your partnership on this important topic. Thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Anna M. Cutaia, Ed.D.
