NEWS & EVENTS
Plastic Water Bottles Needed for MPS Middle Schoolers ‘Great Race’ Send in by May 24th; Vessels will ‘Set Sail’ on Pirate Day - June 4th
Get ready for THE GREAT RACE! Each of our middle schools are working on creating their vessels for the First Annual GREAT RACE and they need your help. Students will be building a school watercraft that must carry TWO school administrators in the race that will launch from Milford Harbor. Talk about meshing their STEM skills, teamwork, and FUN! Our middle schools need to get their hands on as many empty plastic water bottles as possible – and that’s where you come in.
We are asking for your donation of plastic water bottles and to keep it simple – you can just send them in with your elementary or middle school student. Enrichment teacher Tom Stack (who is spearheading this event) will pick them up on his rounds each day (see FLYER for schedule) and get them to the middle schools. We can’t wait to see how this project evolves – and look forward to your help with this wonderful lesson. The race will take place on ‘Pirate Day’ here in Milford (June 4th) – so mark the date on your calendar now. And – if you want a quick smile – take a look at the commercial prepared by our middle schoolers to advertise the event. It’s AWESOME!

IN THE COMMUNITY
The ‘Great Give’ Slated for May 3rd and May 4th – Help Support Our Great Community Groups
Next week, The Great Give will take place on Wednesday and Thursday – and it’s your chance to provide much needed funding to these wonderful non-profit organizations that do so much for our community. More than ever before, our community support groups here in Milford are pressured to perform while financial resources are spread thin. Current budgets can’t even keep up with inflation! That’s why your participation in The Great Give is more important than ever. Here are the local groups that are included in this national fundraising effort. Please give generously. Thanks in advance!
Connecticut Yankee Council, Boy Scouts of America
Literacy Volunteers of Southern CT
Friday, May 5: An Evening Under the Stars, sponsored by the Milford Education Foundation, three showings, $10 per person
Come celebrate an Evening Under the Stars while enjoying our completely renovated Foran High School Planetarium. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Milford Education Foundation – a non-profit group that has helped fund MANY projects over the years for Milford students. Save the date! FLYER
Saturday, May 6: Mackenzie’s 15th Annual (and final!) Beach Cleanup, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Local former student Mackenzie Powers was concerned about finding trash on our beaches – and for the past 15 years has organized the Mackenzie’s Annual Beach Cleanup. The time has come, however, for Mackenzie to move on to bigger things (she’s an Environmental Fellow at Stetson University!) and she has arranged for her final Milford event. Teams will deploy from Walnut Beach and Silver Sands and you are welcome to join in. Pre-registration is available (so Mackenzie can arrange for proper quantities of clean up supplies). Click HERE for more info and we hope to see you on the beach on May 6th!
Enjoy the weekend, all! See you next week!
