Parent Weekly 4/29/22

4-29-22

Dear WSMS Families,

I hope you all had a relaxing spring break! This week did not feel like spring Brrr! The forecast promises warmer temperatures as we move into May next week.

Next week, we will start administering the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) to the students. As you know these are our state accountability assessments. They assess the students progress on the common core standards in math, english, and science (gr 8 only for science). The students will be getting a different test every week so it will not be too taxing and there will be plenty of time for make-ups. The tests are computer based so it will be important for the students to bring a charged chromebook everyday. Also, the students can bring their own headphones to use so they will be comfortable. If they don’t have any we will provide them with school headphones.

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. I know our PTA has planned some nice treats for the staff but please also consider sending an email of thanks. We are so lucky to have such a dedicated staff here at West Shore.

On Thursday, May 5th the WSMS Orchestra will be performing their spring concert at Parsons at 7:00. I am looking forward to seeing our young musicians!

The eighth grade Stepping Up ceremony has been scheduled for June 15th at 5:00. The festivities will be at the JLAW gymnasium. We are so excited to have an in person event again this year!

Finally, as part of their science astrology unit our 8th graders went to the Foran Planetarium this week. I am told they had a great experience!

PTA Corner:

-Come to the PTA Vendor Fair at the VFW on Naugatuck Ave this Saturday from 9:00am-2:00pm! There will be lots of vendors with exciting goods for sale. Come and shop for Mother’s Day!!

-Save your spring cleaning stuff for our Savers drive on May 14th! The drop off will be here at WSMS from 9am-12pm. Savers will take all of your stuff but are in dire need of books!

 Have a great weekend!
