OHS Family News 2/25

2/25/22

Dear OHS Families,

OHS Highlights

This week we are showcasing Fourth Grade!!

The fourth grade students have been busy!  Since the beginning of the school year, we have been working hard to learn new things, collaborate with peers, and utilize our creativity!

Humanities: During Reader’s Workshop, the students have explored characters. Their primary focus on learning character traits and how a character changes throughout the story. They then moved along to reading about nonfiction text. Here they learned that nonfiction books are written with a certain text structure in mind. Lots and lots of writing is happening in fourth grade! From information paragraphs, to narrative stories, and opinion writing. The students continue to build on their grammar skills writing fully detailed complete sentences.  Our social studies time has been filled with lessons that covered Veterans Day, Election Day, and themes within our country that relate to our American people. The PTA graciously covered the cost of the Time for Kids articles allowing students to explore present day topics in more depth through reading and writing.

STEM: The STEM lab has definitely been one of our most favorite places to visit this school year. All fourth grade students have engaged in lessons that follow the engineer design process. To name a few, the students have built a playground for students with disabilities and invented a new sport for the winter olympics. As part of our in class science lessons on Energy, we learned all about the different types of Energy which included a virtual field trip with a recorded performance by The National Theater for Children called “The Power Squad”. The new math program is keeping us busy, too! We learned how to find patterns in a story problem, as well as, a better understanding of factors and multiples. We then moved our attention to fractions. We learned how to add and subtract fractions, compare fractions, as well as, the relationship between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

The fourth grade students are having a fun-filled year of learning! (see pictures)
