What is IDEA?
The Individuals with Disability Education Act was originally enacted by Congress in 1975 to ensure that children with disabilities have the opportunity to receive a free appropriate public education.
Students qualify for special education services, through the Planning and Placement Team PPT) process, due to an identified disability. The Connecticut State Department of Education Bureau of Special Education recognizes the following disability categories:
Autism
Deaf-Blindness
Developmental Delay (ages 3 – 5)
Emotional Disability
Hearing Impairment
Intellectual Disability
Multiple Disabilities
Orthopedic Impairment
Specific Learning Disabilities or Specific Learning Disabilty/Dyselxia
Speech or Language Impaired
Traumatic Brain Injury
Visual Impairment
Other Health Impairment - ADD/ADHD
Other Health Impairment
