Hello JFK Families!

We are really excited for our annual Hawk-a-thon fundraiser, which is happening next Friday!   Our Teachers have been working closely with the PTO to plan the day. Students will be engaging in fun and exciting activities throughout the day that connect to our school hawk mascot. We’re getting to the last week of Hawk-a-thon! Remember, anyone who raises ANY amount qualifies for raffle prizes and helps the PTO support our JFK community throughout the year. Thank you for supporting our PTO and the JFK community of learners.

I am also looking forward to our next PTO meeting next Wednesday, October 12, at 7 pm in our Media Center. I hope everyone is able to attend!!

Have a great weekend!

Specialist Spotlight -  Media

Greetings from the Library Media Center! I'd like to share some updates on the work that we've been doing. All learners participated in some lessons designed to orient them to the class. Topics ranged from proper book care to locating information both in our physical space and online, using databases. Right now, we are discussing how to be safe, respectful and responsible digital citizens, following Common Sense Education's curriculum. If you are interested in learning more about digital citizenship, there are lots of family-friendly resources on commonsense.org.

On a more playful note, we celebrated Dot Day in the middle of September. Using Peter H. Reynolds' book The Dot as a jumping off point, the day is all about encouraging students to be creative and perseverant. Our 3rd grade students heard a similar, motivational message from superstar Stephen Curry, who spoke to us virtually about his picture book, I Have a Superpower. The event recording is now available on Microsoft Flip's YouTube channel, if you would like to hear it, too!

Looking forward to all of the fun opportunities that come in the fall, including the upcoming book fair! Thank you, PTO! As always, if you have any questions or concerns regarding Library Media, please email me at ksoder@milforded.org.

PTO News

Next Week is Hawk-a-Thon!

Hawk-a-Thon is coming up next week, so just a couple of quick reminders -

If you raise ANY amount, you can win prizes! Our prize list is growing all the time, and anyone who raises money can win big. Check out the new prize list!

It’s not too late to donate! Just go HERE and get started, or send your child in with donations in a sealed envelope with “Hawk-a-thon” written on it. Every dollar counts and means we can do more fun activities for our kids throughout the year.

Trunk or Treat is Coming!

Trunk or Treat is fun chance for all JFK families to dress up and go “trick or treating” around the school parking lot! Families volunteer to decorate the trunks of their cars and hand out candy. It’s happening on Friday, 10/21 from 6-7:30 in the JFK front parking lot! (rain date is 10/28). Check out the flyer with more details! If you want to decorate your trunk, click here to sign up!  We’ll start taking candy donations on Monday to feed our Candy Monster in front of the school!

October PTO Meeting - 10/12

Next Weds, 10/12 is our October PTO meeting. It is held at JFK at 7pm, and free childcare is available in the gym. There is a lot going on, so come and learn more about what’s going on with your school and our JFK Community. We hope to see you there!

Two Hour Power Hour Challenge!

There are absolutely NO volunteer requirements for joining the PTO! However, if you join and volunteer for 2 hours at some point during the year, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a super fun family adventure limo ride with free ice cream!

There’s Still Time to Order Your Pies & Cookie Dough!

Our popular fall fundraiser, the Lyman Orchards Pies and Cookie Dough sale is now open through 10/21 with pick up on Thursday, 11/17 at JFK - just in time for Thanksgiving! The proceeds from this popular fundraiser will benefit JFK PTO!

To order, click on this link https://my.mcmfundraising.com/signup/DY4A to create an account and a custom ordering link. If you have multiple children, you can add all of their names into the 'First Name' field when completing the online form (there is no need to create separate links for each child). Once you sign up, you will be given a link to share with your family and friends for them to make their purchases.

Again this year, you can choose to "donate a pie" to Milford's Beth-El Food Bank for Thanksgiving. Last year, JFK PTO donated 20 pies -- this is a nice way to give back to our local community!

Please note, all frozen pies and cookie dough orders that you sell must be picked up and distributed by you as the seller. For friends and family that are not local, there is the "Simply Shipped" option which allows non-perishable items to ship directly to them.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact liz.shipman@gmail.com, jlconroy23@gmail.com or ptojfk@gmail.com

Attention 5th grade families

This year is our kiddos final year in elementary school and we have already started to plan to make it a most memorable one. In doing so, we will be reaching out to families periodically throughout the year to gather information for the yearbook (pictures, memories etc ) as well as the end of year celebration. We strongly encourage you to complete this form as soon as possible to avoid missing out on our direct communications.
