Hello JFK Families!
Thank you to all the families who attended our Open House this week. It was so great to see all our families back in the building! We are looking forward to seeing our families again at Parent-Teacher conferences. This is a great opportunity to engage in a discussion about your child and their progress. More details listed below. Please remember, if you ever have any questions, concerns, or other pertinent information, you can reach out to your child’s teacher any time. As always, we value and appreciate your partnership.
Flyers went home this week with information about Hawk-A-Thon. Check out the news below for more details, and let’s see if 1st grade can hold the lead!
Have a great weekend!

Specialist Spotlight - Music
We’ve had a great start to Music learning this year at JFK! I’m sure your K and grade 1 students have shared some new songs with you. Ask them to sing their favorite...it might be “No More Pie”, or maybe “Pitter Patter”, or for grade 1, “Purple Light” or “Haul Away, Joe!” We are focused on being tuneful, beautiful, and artful; in other words, learning new melodies, learning to keep a steady beat, and performing music with expression. In grades 2, 3, and 4, we have focused on music literacy, reading both pitch and rhythm. Ask your child to show you the hand signs for Do, Re, and Mi (and maybe a few more for gr 3 & 4!) Grade 3 will soon begin studying the instruments of the orchestra. Grade 4 will begin a creating project, using instruments found in the music room. In grade 5, we have taken a deep dive into the history and meaning of our National Anthem. Ask your grade 5 students what they know about it (and jog their memory by mentioning Fort McHenry, or War of 1812.) .
There will be two evening concerts for our students this year, and we are planning to hold them indoors. Please make note of these dates! ALL Grade 5 students will sing on December 6th. ALL Grade 4 students will sing on May 10th. Both concerts also include band and strings.
I am so happy to be back here at JFK! Feel free to reach out to me with any music questions at tvoss@milforded.org.

PTO News
Hawk-a-Thon is HERE!
Flyers went home this week with information about this year’s Hawk-A-Thon! Hawk-a-thon is a single day of JFK spirited fun where kids raise money to support the PTO and win super cool prizes. This year it’s on Friday, Oct. 14th, and the race to raise funds has started!
We’ve already raised over $3,000, and 1st grade is in the lead for the FREE McDonald’s ice cream prize! Remember that if you raise ANY amount, you can win prizes! Check out our flyer for more info
This year, students will again be able to raise money in two ways: signing-up for your child’s personal fundraising page on our virtual platform; OR by collecting actual donations and bringing them into school.
Please note that Hawk-a-thon is the one major fundraiser the PTO has during the year, and it’s your easiest chance to help support all the activities we sponsor - from in-school assemblies to teacher appreciation to family events that bring our whole JFK community together.
Our prize list is growing all the time, but it’s not too late to donate! If you are a local business that wants to support JFK, let us know at ptojfk@gmail.com.
There’s Still Time to Join the PTO!
The start of a new year means it’s time to renew your PTO membership! If you’ve never been a member, joining is a great way to support the programs, events and resources we provide our JFK community all year long. Click here for the PTO Family Membership form, or here for the PTO Staff Membership form.
This year we’re bringing back the Two Hour Power Hour Challenge! If you join the PTO and volunteer for 2 hours at some point during the year, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a super fun family adventure limo ride with free ice cream!
