JFK News

Hello JFK Families,

I am looking forward to the PTO sponsored Trunk or Treat event tonight! Thank you to all the families that volunteered their time to decorate a trunk for this event. I would also like to thank our PTO for organizing this event for our students and families. A special thank you to Mrs. Tuba, Mrs. Cadigan, and Mrs. Shipman for all their help planning and coordinating. Thank you!!  Please remember, this event is only for pre-registered families.

We are also planning our costume day for this upcoming Friday. Parents are invited to our outdoor viewing area to see their child’s class parade! Please see the information below for specific event details.

Thank you to all families that attended our parent teacher conferences this week. We value your time and partnership! Please know that you can reach out to your child’s teacher any time to discuss their progress. As always, please feel free to reach out to me if there is anything additional I can do to support your child(ren).

Have a great weekend,

Mr. Brennan

Costume Parade

On Friday, October 29th students will be able to wear their costumes and participate in a brief parade outside with their grade level. Families will be invited to attend in a designated viewing area.  Please see the attached flyer.

Science Rocks

To start the year in science, we have been focusing on grades 2, 4, and Kindergarten! Some of the topics we have covered in these grades have been weather, matter, and earth systems. We've explored a number of concepts with some hands-on activities including effects of erosion of sand and rocks, the differences between liquids and solids, and a model volcano! That activity was so fun, that I wanted to share it with all of JFK. Here is the link to the experiment.

Moving forward, we will be focusing on grades 1, 3, and 5. We will be exploring some similar topics including climate and matter, but also diving into space systems!

As always, feel free to reach out to me at zsabo@milforded.org. I'm so happy to have the opportunity to bring hands-on science here to JFK! - Mr. Sabo - STEM Educator

JFK Music Night

The Grade 5 Music Night will take place on Thursday, October 28th, at 5:00pm.  We anticipate that this event will last no more than 45 minutes.  We ask that all families bring their own lawn chairs or blankets and set up being cognizant of spacing from other families. Masks are recommended for audience members and due to spacing, the audience is limited to immediate family only.  All performers will be masked and will follow the current recommendations for music spacing, as recommended by the state of Connecticut.  If there is inclement weather, we will be planning a virtual share-out instead of an in-person event. Please see the music night event map.

On 10/28, ALL Gr 5 students will:

  • arrive between 4:30 - 4:45 PM

  • wear a JFK shirt, or any blue shirt

  • report to your staging area (for band, strings, chorus.)

We can't wait to show off our music learning!! Questions? Email tvoss@milforded.org.

Water Bottles Reminder

Please remember to send in a reusable water bottle with your child.  They have access to our water stations and can refill as necessary throughout the day.

Goodie bags - at this time we are continuing to ask our families to not send in goodie bags or other items from one family to the rest of your class.  While in-person visitors are not currently allowed,  an alternative option families can  participate as a virtual “mystery reader” to read a book to their child’s class as a way of celebrating special occasions.  This should be worked out in advance with the classroom teacher and the teacher can set  up a google meet with the family.

Library Media Center Update -We are excited that our school libraries are fully open to students and staff this year.  Book circulation has been very successful and our students are learning how to self checkout! There is no limit on the number of books students may take out, though popular series or titles are based on availability and demand.

Hawk-A-Thon is ON!

Hawk-A-Thon will be on Friday, Nov. 5th! We sent flyers home this week with all the details - to view them again click here

This is the biggest (and final!) fundraiser of the year for JFK PTO, and the funds raised go to support programming for kids, families and staff throughout the year. Plus, you could win great prizes such as Yankee v Red Sox tickets, Kindle Fire tablets and more! The grade that raises the most money will all get gift certificates for a free Carvel cone and if we meet our school-wide goal Mr Brennan will wear a wig to school!

This year, Hawk-A-Thon is all about building up our JFK Community, and kids will have a variety of fun, shared experiences and interactive events throughout the school day including a fun run, community art project, STEM lessons and more!

We're also making it even easier to raise money! You can either use the traditional Pledge Sheet, or you can create a profile for your kids on our JFK Hawk-A-Thon fundraising page to share with friends and family at: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/jfkptohawkathon/addme
