GOOD AFTERNOON HMS FAMILIES:


April showers bring May flowers, as well as a diverse group of monthly holidays:  National Autism Acceptance Month, National Brunch Month (yum!), World Landscape Architecture Month, and Stress Awareness Month.


We hope the weather behaves for you to get outside this weekend, maybe grab some brunch with the family, and relieve some stress as you watch our students perform Alice in Wonderland this Saturday at Jonathan Law high school.

HMS Talent Show - 

  • Tryouts for this year’s Talent Show are scheduled for Tuesday, April 8 after school.

  • Students trying out that need transportation home by a late bus must sign up on the bus list outside Mrs. Flaherty’s room, 125. 

    • Only students that have morning bus transportation are eligible for a late bus. All others must make other transportation arrangements if staying.

HMS Staff/Student Volleyball Fundraiser  -  

  • On Thursday, April 17, the Student Council at HMS is sponsoring a student vs staff volleyball fundraiser in honor of Avery Lafferty. All funds raised will go to Avery’s Little Army. Funds will be raised in the following manner;

    • Students interested in playing in the volleyball match will purchase a ticket for $1 to have a chance of playing in the match. Students may purchase multiple chances to win. 

      • Students may also make a donation instead of purchasing a ticket to play.

    • All purchased tickets will go into a bucket and students will be randomly selected to play.

    • Student Council members will visit HRs leading up to April 15 to sell tickets to interested students. 

    • Selected students will be notified of their participation by Tuesday, April 15. 

  • HMS will hold the student vs staff volleyball match at Parsons Gym during the school day.

  • At the moment, the following staff are participating in the event, Mr. Luzietti , Mrs. Nichols, Mrs. Norden, Mr. Clark, Mrs.Casanova , Officer Banks, Mr. Gottlieb, Mrs. McGuire, Ms. Riordan, Mr. Bartha, and Mrs. Stanley.


Cell Phone/Smartwatch Policy Reminder - 

  • As a reminder and per the district’s policy At the middle school level - No use of a cell phone/smartwatch or other personal communication device will be permitted during school hours. These devices must be turned off or on silent and left in backpacks, stored in a student’s locker or other place designated by building administration. The exception at the middle school level is when the use of a cell phone is authorized in a classroom for academic purposes with the consent of the teacher.

  • Please know that any violation of the district’s policy will result in discipline which includes, but is not limited to, the following:

    • 1st Offense: Remind the student of the policy and have the student turn the phone over to the teacher. The teacher will deliver the phone to the office and the student can pick up the phone from the greeter as they are dismissed from school.

    • 2nd Offense: The student hands the phone over to the teacher. The teacher will deliver the phone to the office. The student is to call home notifying a parent that his/her/their phone was taken for a second time and that a third offense will require a parent to pick the phone up from the school. The student can pick up the phone as they are dismissed from school. 

    • 3rd Offense: The student hands the phone over to the teacher. The teacher will deliver the phone to the office. The student is to call home notifying a parent that his/her/their phone was taken for a third time. The student informs the parent that he/she/they will not get his/her/their cell phone back until a parent picks it up from school.


Drama Club Tickets - 

  • Tickets for the Harborside Drama Club's Spring show, Alice in Wonderland Jr, are on sale now!

  • Shows are at 2:00 and 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 5, at Jonathan Law High School Auditorium. 

  • Tickets are $12 and children ages 3 and under are free.

  • April 5 - Drama Club’s performance of Alice in Wonderland, Jr. : 2:00 and 6:00 p.m. at JLHS.

  • April 18 - No school in observance of Good Friday.

  • April 21- April 25 - No school for Spring Recess.

  • April 30 - Early dismissal for students and Professional Learning for staff.

  • May 12 - May 23 - Smarter Balanced Assessment testing window.

  • May TBD - Grade 8 NGSS Science Test.

  • May 14 - Early dismissal for students and Professional Learning for staff.

  • May 26 - No school in observance of Memorial Day. 

  • May 28 - Grade 8 to Holiday Hill.

  • June 2 - All District Middle School Track Meet at Law. More information to follow.

    • June 3 - Rain date.

  • June 11 - Last day of school.
