The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program “A Constitutional Speech Contest” is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States among high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, rights, and privileges of American citizenship.
Our school counselors consistently build strong relationships with students and help them meet with success in their academics, navigate college and career decisions, and grow into well rounded and thoughtful individuals.

Students in Mrs. Navroth's Spanish 3-1 class are learning vocabulary related to art. They completed a project called "Mi obra de arte". They created pieces of artwork (in their preferred medium) that represent significant moments in their lives from 2022. They also described the symbols in their artwork, and explained the memory that inspired the work of art.
Students in AP Environmental Science test the effectiveness of various materials in filtering acid rain.
This week the Marine Science classes had the "Crab Lab" where they did behavioral and anatomical studies on Asian shore crabs. We will be looking deeper into life in the intertidal zone following this.

Intro to Early Childhood Education visited Housatonic Community College this week. Students conducted an in depth observation at their early childhood lab school, toured campus, and sat in on a Human Behavior lecture.
Mrs. Dotson’s Painting classes are learning about Color Theory and the Color Wheel as well as learning about mixing colors to create a gray scale and tints & shades.

The Foran High School Athletic Department and The Foran Sports Booster Club have teamed up to honor a deserving varsity athlete each week of the season throughout the 2022-2023 school year. Each recipient will be recognized for their performance in the “Friday News” and they will also receive a tee shirt.

Senior Riley Grunow has been selected for her outstanding performance in gymnastics. On Saturday against Hamden, Riley came in first place on the vault with a score of 8.8. In her next meet against Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Warde and Wilton, she scored a 9.0. Next up for Riley and her teammates are the SCC Championships. Congratulations Riley!

Congratulations Ginger Schmidt, Riley Grunow & Kayla Johnson
Foran placed 3rd as a team with a score of 123.05. Ginger Schmidt, Riley Grunow and Kayla Johnson all made the All-SCC team. Ginger finished in 2nd place on floor with a score of 9.0, 8th place on beam with a score of 8.2 and 9th place in the all around with a score of 31.0. Riley finished 5th on vault with a score of 8.5, and 12th in the all around with a score of 30.2. Kayla finished 5th on bars with a score of 8.5, 7th on beam with a score of 8.3, 7th on floor with a score of 8.55 and 6th in the all around with a score of 33.55
Foran Gymnastics had two meets this week! On Saturday 2/4, Foran earned a win over Hamden for the second time this season! On Monday, 2/6, Foran competed in a quad meet against Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Warde and Wilton earning a 4th place finish. The gymnasts will compete in the SCC championships on Thursday 2/9 at Law.
The Foran/Law Swim Team is fundraising for Lion Heart. They will be completing a swimathon on Tuesday, February 14th. All money raised goes directly to Breast Cancer Research. If you would like to donate, you can donate directly to the Milford Swimming Page.
Lion Heart supports Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven and the Yale Cancer Center by endowing breast cancer research grants. Lion Heart raises funds with Lap-a-Thons. These swimming events are held across Connecticut in January and are led by SCC swim coaches, 16 girls and 17 boys swimming/diving teams.

The swim team is finishing their season strong with two additional wins in the last week. First win was a rematch against West Haven on Friday February 3. Milford 89 - West Haven 73. On Tuesday February 7th, the team had another win against Sheehan, with a final score of Milford 88 - Sheehan 70. Tuesday was also the final home meet of the season and our senior night. The team celebrated eight seniors, Jose Abreu (Foran - Captain), Jake Ackley (Law - Captain), Johann Chen (Foran), John Cummings (Law - Captain), Ayron De Guzman (Foran), Gerold Gutierrez (Foran - Captain), Connor Nieman (Foran) and Lenny Prue (Foran). The team is happy to have a win on senior night and are looking forward to their final meet of the season on Friday against Notre Dame West Haven at Albertus Magnus. Current team record is 5-6 for the season.
Wrestling
“Wrestle for Wasson” night!!

The Foran wrestling completed their regular season on Wednesday night with a victory over SCC rival Amity. They finished the regular season with a 28-9 record and were champions of their SCC division. They are headed to the postseason with an eye on the Class M State Championship! In addition, their “Wrestle for Wasson” service project raised over $3,700 for the Daniel Wasson Memorial fund, which honors the fallen Milford police officer. Leading the way this season are captains Craig Mager (32 wins), Keith Pokorowski (32 wins), and Mason Hallstrom (31 wins). Seniors Joey Cichowski (33 wins) and Antonio Madero (26 wins), Junior Antonio Perez (33 wins), and sophomore Antonios Aspras (31 wins) are also prime contributors! The Class M State tournament will be held next weekend, 2/17-2/18 at Law! So come across town to support your Lions wrestlers in their quest for their 3rd State title!!!

Girls Basketball
This past week the Foran Girls Basketball team dropped both of their contests. On Friday night North Haven defeated the Lady Lions 42-38 and Hamden took the game on Tuesday night 55-37. This upcoming Friday night at 6PM the girls basketball team will play Lauralton Hall and it will be senior night. Please come out and support these outstanding senior student-athletes.

Congratulations Jonna Lord & Luciana Cappello All Conference!
This past weekend they performed at their SCC competition and placed 5 out of 12 teams. We had two recipients of the All Conference award: Jonna Lord and Luciana Cappello. In addition, Jonna Lord took home the Merit Award for her dedication, leadership and commitment to her team. Their next competitions are at Oxford on 2/25 and States in New Haven on 3/4.

Congratulations to Aidan Riha, Maddie Babcock, and George Lin. Aidan and Maddie each placed 5th in the JV Tournament at North Haven High School, Aidan in Foil and Maddie in Sabre. This past weekend George placed 7th in the Novice Tournament at Guilford High School.

Sci Lions
The Sci-Lions, Foran Science Olympiad teams competed at the 2023 Yale Invitational Science Olympiad. There were schools from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and as far away as Florida and Washington state competing on a very cold Saturday at Yale. Our Sci-Lions teams placed 16th and 19th out of 34 teams. Next is the Connecticut Science Olympiad at UCONN on March 11.

Foran's GSA club will have a meeting on Tuesday, February 14th in room 260 at 2pm.
The Giving Table
Last week, The Giving Table prepared Goulash, salad and cornbread for The Beth El Shelter, for providing shelter and meals for those suffering hardship in the Milford community. We also prepared a carrot and potato soup with dill, along with a salad bar and cheddar biscuits, for our Foran High school counselors, in celebration of School Counselor Week.

Freshmen Class Fundraiser
The freshmen class fundraiser has begun! All freshmen will be selling chocolate bunnies to raise money for their Ring Dance and other class activities. The Fundraiser runs until Feb. 24th.
All orders must be paid for at the time of the sale!
The freshman class officers distributed the order forms during Common Time this week to all freshmen. If a student did not receive one, please have them see Ms. Georgetti in room 304 in Green Hall.

You can REGISTER TO VOTE if you are:

Spring SAT/PSAT day will be Wednesday, March 22.

Foran Child Learning Center
Now Enrolling for 2023-2024
Half-day preschool program focused on the development of Kindergarten readiness skills in an innovative learning environment.
The Foran Child Learning Center located at Foran High School is now enrolling three and four year old students for the 2023-2024 school year.
Our preschool is open to Milford residents and operates five days per week from 8:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. following the MPS school calendar.
Children will participate in daily standards based learning experiences focused on intentional play, executive functioning, citizenship, personal development, and creativity/innovation.
The Foran Child Learning Center serves as a laboratory classroom to support Foran High School students enrolled in child development classes. High school students, under the direction of the classroom teacher, utilize the learning center for observation, planning, and implementation of lessons as well as assisting in daily routines.
