Ms. Hoffer's Kindness Connection raised over 100 pounds, a new record for our candy drive this year. This year we partnered up with Pumpkin Delight and Mathewson Elementary and were so impressed with the outpouring generosity from both the students and the parents. Due to all the candy we collected we decided to donate to both Operation Gratitude and the Ronald McDonald House.

Advanced Studio students learned that tie dye isn’t just for colorful t-shirts. Ever create a brown tie dye shirt? Well, maybe you need a lesson in color theory since understanding color theory and color interaction is the key for awesome tie dye. Advanced Studio students explored color theory and a little science with a new dye technique- ice dying. Using water soluble powdered pigments sprinkled on ice results in really exciting “watercolor” like effects. These tapestries, created by Sophia Ayoub, Reiya Paquet, and Oli Violetta, are examples of ice dying or a blend of pre-mixed dyes and ice dying. If you want to try it at home, Google the directions, get your ice ready and have a color wheel handy!
Students in Mrs. Dotson’s Drawing classes started the printing process for their Drypoint Etchings. The etchings are inspired by the artist Albrecht Durer, who was a master drawer and printmaker. Images are of students inking and cleaning the printing plate and then running the plate through the press to get a proof print of their images.

Girls Wrestling
Girls wrestling is the fastest growing sport in the United States. Over the
last few years, many colleges and universities have added girls wrestling
as a varsity sport. In fact, Sacred Heart University here in Connecticut is
the first Division I girls wrestling program in the country. Girls wrestling is in
the Olympics, and has been growing here in Connecticut. Last year over
200 girls competed in wrestling and for the first time there was a girls state wrestling championship. The sport of wrestling is especially suited for young women. It builds
physical strength and self-esteem. It teaches discipline, hard work,
personal responsibility, and overcoming failure. It is also a great way to
stay in shape, and cross training has been shown to improve performance in other sports as well. I have been coaching here at Foran High for about 10 years. We have built
the wrestling program into one of the best in the state. For the first time last
year, we had girls competing for our team. And one of them won the state
championship! I firmly believe that over the next few years, girls wrestling
will become its own separate varsity sport. I firmly believe in the values that
wrestling teaches young men and young women. And to that end, my goal
is to build the best girls wrestling program in the state of Connecticut. That process will begin immediately. So to any girls that are even remotely intrigued by the idea of wrestling, I encourage them to contact me and to give it a try. I guarantee that the experience will be positive and you won’t regret it!
