Some Furry Friends Visit Foran!

In Spanish I students have been reviewing vocabulary for classes, school supplies and time. This week they got a first hand look at class schedules at University High School in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They then made their own schedules of the classes offered at University High School, (UHS) and compared school life at UHS to their school lives at Foran. They found that a lot of things were very similar!

AP chemistry did RedOx titrations; Chemistry and Earth Systems looked at the combustion reaction of magnesium.

Students in Physics of the Universe recently finished building towers of different heights and measuring their resonant frequencies. They generated data to verify the trends found from earthquakes in the past with the 1985 Mexico City earthquake being our case study. We successfully determined that different frequencies affect buildings of different heights!

Students in Ms. Plude’s Pottery class have just finished their textured vessel projects. The textures you see on the handbuilt mugs and cylinders were created from stamps the students designed and constructed during the last marking period.

The students in Ms. Plude’s Creative Arts class have been experimenting with using traditional materials in an unconventional way to create melted wax paintings using crayons on canvas boards. Each design they created exemplified a specific color theory as defined by the German poet Wolfgang von Goethe.

 Computer Science

This week Computer Science students attended an in class field trip where four guest speakers spoke to various careers in computer science. Speakers included Dr. Drew Conway (A data scientist from Two Sigma), Dr. Lisa Lancor (A professor from Southern Connecticut State University who spoke on cybersecurity), Lauren Ribordy (an artificial intelligence and machine learning engineer for Lockheed Martin), and former Jonathan Law graduate Melissa Chodziutko (Current IBM Z OS developer and Indi Game Dev). Students listened to presentations and asked a variety of questions. This is the start of some work to have more industry connections for Capstone mentors and Internship advisors for Computer Science in Milford.
