ATTENTION FRESHMEN!

November 15th-21st

Joseph A. Foran High School

Influences on Youth Forum

A program REQUIRED for all 9th graders and their parents

A YouTube Forum to be viewed by both students/parents together between

Monday November 15th and Friday November 21st.

The directions on how to access the forum on YouTube will be posted beginning

November 15 at:

https://milfordprevention.org/freshmanforum2021/

Ninth grade students AND their parents/guardians are required to view this important program. The purpose of this event is to promote dialogue and provide information regarding the physical, social, legal and emotional influences of illegal substances and social media on our students.

Due to COVID-19 circumstances, we are hosting this forum virtually this year. All participants should follow the Milford Public Schools distance learning expectations. Student participation at this forum fulfills an assignment within the Health curriculum. Should your child not be able to view this program, he/she will be asked to complete a 2-3 page research/ writing assignment on a related topic in order to independently fulfill their obligation and make them aware of the aspects of these complex issues addressed by the forum.

At the conclusion of this forum, there will be two steps that must be completed to earn proper credit for this assignment:

Both the student AND their parent/guardian will complete a survey about the presenters and submit it via SurveyMonkey.

The parent/guardian must sign off on an attendance form and submit it via Google Form. Once completed, you/your child will be entered into a drawing for prizes such an Amazon Gift Card, tickets to the Thanksgiving Day football game between Foran and Law and a t-shirt!!

In this month’s Foran Learning Commons Lowdown, find out how to check your Chromebook for updates to enable applications and programs to run more efficiently.  Take a look and try out some of the strategies and resources posted to destress.  Our Flipster magazine database also has some new issues to explore, and don’t forget to review the book recommendations advertised that align with the various celebrations November holds!

In Ms. Hoffer's US History classes students selected modern day companies and presented very engaging arguments about whether they believed the company represented a captain of industry or a robber baron. After the presentations, the class debriefed and reflected on the arguments presented and then voted. Additionally, students dressed up like their companies and included props/posters as well. Awesome to see the authentic work they created and presented.

Students in AP European History have researched key figures from the Protestant Reformation to determine their validity as sources. Students presented their research on charter paper and then used dry erase markers on their desks to rank them.

In AP Psychology with Mr. Williams, students wrapped up their Sensation & Perception unit with some hands-on activities they created to explain our 5 senses.  Topics pictured above include color constancy, anatomy of the eye, and sensory interaction (gustatory & olfaction).  In their grand finale Mr. Cesare & Mr. Tupka helped demonstrate sensory adaptation as they attempted to play toss with perception distortion goggles on

The Model United Nations club met this week to continue their first debate of the year regarding Child Labor and Child Soldier issues around the world. Thus far we've spent time preparing for the debate by researching different counties for the debate and learning parliamentary procedures.

Students in Mr. Doolings Anthropology class just finished up their project on the Primate Order. After studying evolution, each student researched and created flyers for three different species of primates, emphasizing their characteristics and social behaviors. Then as a class, they created the following display of the Primate Order, which includes a human made of tape!

Ms. Cassell's English 1 classes engaged in "philosophical chairs' ' discussions of thematic statements in anticipation of reading Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Her English 2 classes analyzed word choice and author's purpose in Jonathan Edwards' "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God '' to build background knowledge for their reading of Arthur Miller's play The Crucible.

Students in Ms. Condon's AP Language and Composition classes participated in the Great Candy Battle of 2021! For some Halloween-themed fun, students worked collaboratively in groups to build an argument determining which candy should be named the official candy of America. Students then presented their arguments in front of a panel of judges and defended their choice against a series of questions from both the panel and student audience! Thank you to Mr. Tupka, Mr. Kochiss, Mrs. Cassell, Mrs. O'Keefe, Ms. Georgetti, and Mr. Raucii for sitting on the panels! And congratulations to the winning teams, Skittles and Dum Dum Lollipops!

This week, students participated in an interdisciplinary lesson with Mrs. Morazzini (Spanish) and Mr. Czajkowski (Art).  On November 1st and 2nd, Mexico celebrates a beautiful tradition which celebrates the lives of their loved ones who have passed.  One special tradition of Dia de los Muertos is making sugar skulls, also known as "calaveras".  Mr. Chi taught students how to design and decorate their own skulls. ¡Feliz Dia de los Muertos!

Spanish 2 students in Señora Annunziata’s classes were acting as teachers, speaking in the target language and reviewing the quiz with their peers.

In Physics of the Universe  we've been looking at geologic activity in Hawaii. We used the "seismic explorer" to track earthquakes, volcanoes, and tectonic plate movement over the past 40 years. Each dot in the picture represents 1 earthquake...Hawaii gets lots of earthquakes!

Digital Photography Students In-Action

Photography students are beginning to explore the technical components of exposure. Here students are learning how to adjust their ISO and shutter speeds to capture a properly exposed image. Their challenge didn’t stop there. Taking into consideration how a shutter speed can capture the motion of an object, students composed images that create a stop-action effect or an intentional blur of motion by the way they adjusted their shutter speeds in conjunction with the moving water. All that and only a few minor spills!

Ceramics and Pottery

Mrs. Plude’s Ceramics classes have recently completed their contemporary artist relief tiles. They finished these by adding color with unconventional materials.

This week, the Culinary 1 and Advanced Culinary classes are  enjoying our unit on seasonal baking. What's that wonderful aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg in the hallways? It's a warm apple crisp topped with vanilla ice cream, and a braided apple puff pastry with cinnamon cream cheese.

The Peer Assist Culinary class, practiced temperature control, and learned about carry-over cooking. This is when protein continues to cook when it's taken off the heat source. They prepared mini burgers, and had fun with a burger toppings buffet.

T.E.A.M.S courses this quarter have been participating in various team building activities and games. The PE staff at Foran are proud to announce the overall winning teams for each period class.

SENIOR PARENT & FAMILY AD

Congratulations on reaching this momentous stage in your child's high school years! Have you been looking for a creative way to tell your senior "I love you" and "I'm proud of you!" as they wrap up their high school career? If so, how about purchasing a Senior Parent and Family Ad in the yearbook?

To help you celebrate this milestone, the yearbook staff is now accepting orders for Senior Parent and Family Ads to be placed in the yearbook. These ads give you the opportunity to express your love, pride, and congratulations to the entire school!

In order to purchase, you must build your ad for your senior online with our yearbook company, Jostens at www.jostens.com/yearbookads

You will need to pay, create, and submit the ad online. This allows you to submit pictures, text, and design online; you don't have to mail anything in or wait for your pictures to be returned to you! Begin by going to www.jostens.com/yearbookads and simply follow their instructions!

In order to guarantee a space for your student's ad in the yearbook, submissions must be made by December 17th.

Senior Ads were a large part of my own high school experience and I loved seeing childhood photos of myself and my classmates in my own yearbook, so please consider adding your student's memories to this wonderful tradition at Foran! If you have any questions please contact me, Meghan Condon, at mcondon@milforded.org; we can't wait to start creating with you!
