Influences on Youth Forum
A program REQUIRED for all 9th graders and their parents
A YouTube Forum to be viewed by both students/parents together between Monday November 15th and Friday November 19th.
The directions on how to access the forum on YouTube will be posted beginning November 15 at:
https://milfordprevention.org/...
Ninth grade students AND their parents/guardians are required to view this important program. The purpose of this event is to promote dialogue and provide information regarding the physical, social, legal and emotional influences of illegal substances and social media on our students.
Due to COVID-19 circumstances, we are hosting this forum virtually this year. All participants should follow the Milford Public Schools distance learning expectations. Student participation at this forum fulfills an assignment within the Health curriculum. Should your child not be able to view this program, he/she will be asked to complete a 2-3 page research/ writing assignment on a related topic in order to independently fulfill their obligation and make them aware of the aspects of these complex issues addressed by the forum.
At the conclusion of this forum, there will be two steps that must be completed to earn proper credit for this assignment:
Both the student AND their parent/guardian will complete a survey about the presenters and submit it via SurveyMonkey.
The parent/guardian must sign off on an attendance form and submit it via Google Form. Once completed, you/your child will be entered into a drawing for prizes such an Amazon Gift Card, tickets to the Thanksgiving Day football game between Foran and Law and a t-shirt!!

Congratulations to JAF’s Advanced Photography students: Mia Coppola, Maddi Fuller, Samantha Garcia, Sidney Jean-Baptiste, Jolita Sanchez Garcia, and Carly Zieman. Photographs created by these students were selected to be featured in the ASAP!’s 11th annual Celebration of Young Photographers Exhibit. This year’s exhibition theme was space; students were challenged to think about space from a physical or conceptual point of view. Then, they captured those thoughts in a single image. ASAP! received over 300 submissions from 27 schools across the state. The judging process was blind. The Top 60 Photographers will be honored at a special event at Bryan Memorial Town Hall in Washington Depot, CT on November 14. These students will be representing JAF in this special event as well as in the virtual exhibit that will accompany the show. Way to go artists, LION PRIDE!

Headline Game in Journalism
Students in journalism have been practicing headline writing. We practiced by coming up with headlines with the game MAN Bites Dog.
Students in Mrs. Cassell's English 1 classes began their unit on the Use of Technology in the Modern World by reading an article on digital media's impact on people's reading skills. In small groups, they shared their annotations and discussed their questions and observations about the article's purpose.
In Astronomy this week, students are exploring the life cycle of a star. They were able to see the various stages of life of different stars, including looking at nebulae - where a star's life can both begin and end! Nebulae come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are named for constellations they appear in from our vantage point on Earth (Orion Nebula), while others are named for their appearance (Eskimo Nebula or Turtle Nebula). If you're looking for a good wallpaper for your phone or computer, check them out!
Students in Mrs. Bradford's World History class have been researching and preparing for a "Meeting of the Minds" debate on the ideal form of government. Students took on the role of "Actor," portraying a historical figure, "Public Relations Agent" introducing and providing background information about the historical figure, and "Investigative Reporter" researching which historical figures had ideas that supported or opposed his/her own, preparing and asking probing questions of other panel members. It got a little heated with most of the historical figures taking issue with Thomas Hobbes' strong stance!
In AP Psychology with Mr. Williams, students had some hands-on labs regarding their Sensation & Perception unit. Some were student led via presentations and some were done by Mr. Williams throughout the week
Students in US History presented their informed action projects to their peers this week. Students researched American females that made positive contributions to American society, and then designed projects to further that woman's efforts in society today. Students created brochures, posters, surveys, and infographics. One student directed his own music video based on the work of Billie Jean King: https://youtu.be/VYYG7vRreu0
Students in AP Seminar refined and focused their research questions. This week, they committed to the questions, and now begin the process of research, writing, and presenting their findings in teams!
Students in Latin II, III, and IV present research projects on various aspects of ancient Roman life, including mythology, religious customs, ancient tombs, military forts, and triumphal arches, to name just a few topics.
Human Growth & Development
Human Growth and Development students crafted costumes for children using only a paper bag and construction paper.
Child Growth & Development
Child Growth and Development students completed a book project designed around a developmentally appropriate story which included target areas of development students promoted through props and an interactive activity.

SENIOR PARENT & FAMILY AD
Congratulations on reaching this momentous stage in your child's high school years! Have you been looking for a creative way to tell your senior "I love you" and "I'm proud of you!" as they wrap up their high school career? If so, how about purchasing a Senior Parent and Family Ad in the yearbook?
To help you celebrate this milestone, the yearbook staff is now accepting orders for Senior Parent and Family Ads to be placed in the yearbook. These ads give you the opportunity to express your love, pride, and congratulations to the entire school!
In order to purchase, you must build your ad for your senior online with our yearbook company, Jostens at www.jostens.com/yearbookads.
You will need to pay, create, and submit the ad online. This allows you to submit pictures, text, and design online; you don't have to mail anything in or wait for your pictures to be returned to you! Begin by going to www.jostens.com/yearbookads and simply follow their instructions!
In order to guarantee a space for your student's ad in the yearbook, submissions must be made by December 17th.
Senior Ads were a large part of my own high school experience and I loved seeing childhood photos of myself and my classmates in my own yearbook, so please consider adding your student's memories to this wonderful tradition at Foran! If you have any questions please contact me, Meghan Condon, at mcondon@milforded.org; we can't wait to start creating with you!
