Solar Eclipse - Although our STEM department originally believed that we would be able to safely view the eclipse, the Connecticut State Department of Education recently issued the following guidance: "Since there will not be a total solar eclipse occurring in Connecticut, there is no safe time to view the event without specialized glasses or filters. Viewing any part of the bright Sun, even through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics, will instantly cause severe eye injury."  Even with the purchase of the eclipse glasses from online websites, it is difficult to ascertain whether the glasses have been verified to meet ISO-2312-2 regulations.  As mentioned in the FAQ document, even with the availability of the glasses, it is still not advised to look toward the sun even donning this eyewear.  During the totality of an eclipse, when the sky becomes the darkest, damage can still result to the eyes.  Oversight of the proper wearing of these glasses with a large crowd of students is difficult, even with clear instructions provided prior to viewing.

Unfortunately, the potential risk of severe eye injury from viewing the eclipse, even inadvertently, causes us to cancel our planned viewing of the solar eclipse for Monday, April 8. Please know that our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students and staff drives our decision.

5th Grade Families - Today you should have received a communication about middle school course selections for incoming sixth grade students.  Please take some time to review and choose which is best for your student. They will also rank their preferences for World Language choices this year - Spanish, French or American Sign Language.  Click on the links in the letter to register for your classes.

Fourth Grade Waves & Energy Showcase

Our fourth grade students did an amazing job identifying a problem and trying to get to a solution for a variety of energy issues.

Thank you to Mrs. Clark and the fourth grade teachers.

Bus Evacuation Drill:  Conducting emergency drills  (fire, crisis, lockdown, etc.) is one of the most important ways we enhance our preparedness for students and staff during an emergency. Drills allow us to practice what we need to do when an emergency arises in our school.  Calf Pen Meadow School will be conducting a School Bus Evacuation drill the week of April 8. This will only be a drill and will be conducted in accordance with the School Incident Management Protocols established by the district, and in collaboration with our student transportation provider.  Please discuss the importance of our emergency drills with your children.  If you have any feedback please reach out to jwhitaker@milforded.org.  We thank you for your cooperation and partnership in making our schools a safer place for learning.
