Summer Reading Program
Harborside Middle School                     Mrs. Scranton                     Team Esprit        Grade 7

Welcome to grade seven!   One of our first responsibilities for this new school year is to share our summer reading selections.  You were asked to read a minimum of THREE books over the summer vacation.  You could have selected your novels from the Milford Schools Summer Reading List or from any other source that contained interesting titles or your favorite authors.  If you are still searching for that favorite book, try these links.

You were asked to keep track of the characters, plots and settings of your books. Please use this essential information to construct your final projects.  To help you plan your presentations, several suggestions are offered to you.  You may use these suggestions or invent your own presentation using the critical information from your novel.  Please be sure to keep plot twists and surprise endings a surprise!

 Suggestion #1                 SUMMARY

Fill in this graphic organizer, or any  organizer  of your choice with essential information
from your novel.  Using a graphic organizer, write a summary of your book.

All of your projects should include a recommendation.  Should others read this book?  Please explain why or why not.  Don't forget to give yourself credit.  Your name and date should appear on each project.

Suggestion #2                    NEWSPAPER

Create a newspaper using the essential information from your book.  Summarize the plot of your story as a newspaper article.  Describe the weather in another section.  Write a feature story about one of the main characters.  Include a drawing of that character.  Write an editorial about a conflict within the novel.  Add two or three advertisements that are important to the story.  Advertise the novel!  Good luck!

Suggestion #3                        POSTER

Make a poster depicting a literary scene from your novel.  Give thought to all the important information in your book.  Please place the title and author in a prominent location on the posterboard.  Illlustrate the scene by including clues that describe the setting (time and place), the characters (characteristics and personality), and a hint about the plot.  Include a caption that explains your scene.  Be creative!  Decorate with color and artistic materials. Posters will be displayed in our hallways.  Have fun!

Suggestion #4            POTTER POETRY (Harry Haiku)

Using essential information from your novel, create original poetry.  Your poem may be from a character's point of view,   autobiographical , or it may be a  Personification Poem .  You might choose to do an Acrostic Poem , a Cinquain, Diamonte, or a Haiku  http://www.berkeleyprep.org/lower/fourth/writing/old_favorites.htm

You might even consider your own creation.  Illustrations are encouraged.  Be creative!
